UT Students Launch Creative Crowdfunding Campaign to Support Battlefield Farm
Meet Grace, Lauren, Luke, and John—four University of Tennessee students with big hearts and an even bigger vision. Through a class project turned community mission, they’ve launched a creative crowdfunding campaign to support Battlefield Farm and help tackle food insecurity in East Knoxville.
Partnering for Impact
These students have teamed up with Battlefield Farm, a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to growing fresh, organic produce and delivering it to neighbors who need it most. Based in East Knoxville—an area identified as both a food desert and a food swamp—Battlefield Farm is working to reverse long-standing health and economic disparities by increasing access to nutritious, affordable food.
Why This Campaign Matters
As the students learned more about East Knoxville’s challenges, they became inspired to act. The area suffers from limited access to grocery stores and fresh food, leading to rising rates of hypertension, diabetes, and food-related health issues. Chris Battle, founder of Battlefield Farm, explains it best:
“Our goal for 2025 is to expand what we’re doing—feeding the community, increasing access, and producing and distributing more food to meet the growing need.”
Where the Funds Will Go
The funds raised by Grace, Lauren, Luke, and John will go directly toward Battlefield Farm’s expansion goals in 2025, including:
- Growing more produce in additional garden beds
- Enhancing the Veggie Van mobile delivery program
- Purchasing equipment and supplies to improve food production and distribution
